چکیده

HE studies of THODAY and READ (1947) using root-tip cells of Vicia T j a b a demonstrated that oxygen has a marked effect in increasing the frequency of X-ray-induced chromosome aberrations. These investigators later showed (1949) that when alpha rays are used, the oxygen effect is much less, since the yield of aberrations with oxygen present was only slightly greater than in its absence. In experiments on the oxygen effect using Tradescantia microspore chromosomes ( GILES and RILEY 1949, 1950 ; GILES and BEATTY 1950), a pronounced effect of oxygen on X-ray-induced rearrangements has also been demonstrated. Preliminary studies of CONGER (unpublished) further indicate that there is little or no oxygen effect when aberrations are induced in mature pollen grains (exposed in air as compared with nitrogen) by alpha rays, thus agreeing with the observations of THODAY and READ (1949). In view of these results it seemed of interest to investigate the oxygen effect when fast neutrons are used to produce aberrations in Tradescantia, since this radiation is intermediate in effectiveness with respect to chromosome break production between X-rays and alpha particles (cf. KOTVAL and GRAY 1947).

Some Aspects of the Chemical Protection against Radiation Damage to Vicia Faba Chromosomes.

INCE 1933 when CRABTREE and CRAMER first reported that anaerobiosis S decreased the effects of radium treatment on cancerous tumors, there have been numerous reports on the recovery of living cells, both animal and plant, from the effects of ionizing radiations. LEA (1945) and GRAY (1952) have reviewed the literature concerning these effects. An excellent area for the study of these effects has...

Dose Fractionation on Chromosome Aberration Frequencies I K Tradescantia Microspores. Neutrons

HE previous paper (DE SERRES and GILES 1953) has described the results T of experiments investigating the effects of fractionated doses of X-rays on the frequency of chromosome aberrations induced in Tradescantia microspores. The results of these studies demonstrate that there is a marked effect of X-ray dosage fractionation in reducing the yield of 2-hit aberration types and, further, that no ...

OCCURRENCE OF CHROMOSOMAL ABERRATIONS IN TRAFFIC POLICEMEN 3.1. INTRODUCTION Cytogenetic studies started during the early 1940’s with the studies of Karl Sax on the induction of chromosomal aberration in Tradescantia

Cytogenetic studies started during the early 1940’s with the studies of Karl Sax on the induction of chromosomal aberration in Tradescantia microspores by X-rays and later it has been applied in the study of human chromosomes. Generally the cytogenetic techniques are useful to estimate radiation doses received due to external radiation exposure it is difficult to estimate radiation doses except...

An Analysis of X-Ray Induced Chromosomal Aberrations in Tradescantia.

HE cause and nature of chromosomal alterations has become an imT portant genetic problem since it has been shown that both mutation and speciation often are associated with structural alterations of the chromosomes (DOBZHANSKY 1937). The frequency of spontaneous structural changes is too low in most organisms to permit a statistical analysis of types or frequencies of alterations, although rece...

The mechanism of the effect of postirradiation centrifugation on the yield and the kinetics of radiation-induced chromosome aberrations in barley.

CENTRIFUGATION during or after a dose of radiation has been found to increase the yield of chromosome aberrations in Tradescantia microspores and Vicia faba root meristems (SAX 1943; WOLFF and VON BORSTEL 1954; ANDERSON 1955). These observations suggested that altered positional arrangement of chromosome strands in the interphase nuclei, arising from centrifugation, resulted in reduced restitut...
